Former Leeds United and Cardiff City Defender Sol Bamba Passes Away at Age 39

Sol Bamba, Former Defender for Leeds United, Leicester City, Cardiff City, and Hibernian, Dies at 39

Sol Bamba, a former defender for teams like Leeds United, Leicester City, Cardiff City, Hibernian, and Middlesbrough, has died at the age of 39. He began his career with Paris St-Germain and also played for Dunfermline. Bamba was part of the Cardiff team that won promotion to the Premier League in 2018.

Bamba, who was an Ivory Coast international, overcame non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer, in 2021 while he was still playing for Cardiff. Recently, he had been working at the Turkish club Adanaspor. The club announced his passing on Saturday night. They shared that Bamba became ill before a match against Manisa Football Club and was taken to a hospital, where he sadly passed away. The club expressed their condolences to his family and the community.

Leeds United, where Bamba was captain from 2015 to 2016, also shared their sadness, saying they were "devastated to learn of the news that former captain Sol Bamba has passed away." They added, "Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this tragic time. Rest in peace, Sol, you will be forever in our hearts."

Bamba's career included playing for Paris St-Germain, then moving to Dunfermline and Hibernian. He joined Leicester City in 2011 under manager Sven-Goran Eriksson. Earlier this week, after Eriksson passed away, Bamba posted a tribute on social media, calling Eriksson "not just an exquisite person, but also the best coach I've ever had, inspiring my journey as a player and as a manager."

After playing for teams like Trabzonspor in Turkey and Palermo in Italy, Bamba joined Leeds United. But it was at Cardiff City where he became a fan favorite after being signed on a free transfer by manager Neil Warnock in 2016. He scored on his debut against Bristol City and played a crucial role in helping Cardiff get promoted to the Premier League the following season. He made his Premier League debut with Cardiff and scored four goals in their only season in the top division under Warnock.

In January 2021, Cardiff City announced that Bamba, then 35, was being treated for cancer. The club described him as "universally admired by teammates, staff, and supporters in the Welsh capital." Just four months later, Bamba returned to playing after announcing he was cancer-free following chemotherapy treatment.
